REDROW REGENERATION WINS PRESTIGIOUS INDUSTRY AWARD FOR ‘BARKING CENTRAL’

Landmark new town centre scheme wins ‘Best Brownfield Site’ and is highly commended in ‘Best First Time Buyer Development’ category

Redrow Regeneration has won the 2007 Daily Telegraph Your New Home Award for ‘Best Brownfield Site’, for its landmark regeneration project - ‘Barking Central’. The development has also been highly commended in the ‘Best First Time Buyer’ category at the announcement which was made at an awards ceremony at the Globe Theatre on Thursday 6 March 2008.

Designed by leading contemporary architects Allford Hall Monaghan Morris (AHMM), ‘Barking Central’ is a mixed-use town centre scheme that is exemplary of the work done by Redrow Regeneration. The scheme is already revitalising the Borough of Barking and Dagenham and setting benchmarks in both quality and values.

John Ireland, Managing Director or Redrow Regeneration is thrilled with the company’s success. He comments: “’Barking Central’ has been a seminal project for us, and one which we are all very proud of. Like many developments of its size and community nature, it has not always been plain sailing. However, our successful partnerships have allowed us to consistently deliver on time and on budget in creating much needed housing and educational facilities that I hope will benefit the people of Barking and Dagenham for many years to come.”

Built on the former R Whites Lemonade factory site, ‘Barking Central’ comprises 518 residential apartments plus 21,000sqft of commercial space and 18,500sqft of retail space. In addition, a new public realm larger than Trafalgar Square will be built as part of the Mayor of London’s ‘Top 100 Public Spaces’ initiative. The scheme centres around a new library, a Lifelong Learning Centre, café and council services ‘One-Stop-Shop’, and marks the beginning of ambitious regeneration plans for the borough.

John Ireland continues: “The award for ‘Best Brownfield Site’ recognises the role played by the scheme in rejuvenating the area and providing the local and wider community with new opportunities, particularly in terms of housing and education. The award is not only a great endorsement for Redrow Regeneration and the scheme itself, but also for Barking town centre which has been given a new lease of life and the recognition it deserves.”

Now in its fifth year, the Daily Telegraph Your New Home Awards is jointly organised by leading national UK newspaper, The Daily Telegraph and leading property consumer magazine, Your New Home, and is one of the industry’s most recognised accolades. The awards have been established to highlight new build developments and conversion projects, which in our judges' opinion have excelled within their chosen arena.

‘Barking Central’ has received a number of other prestigious accolades in the past. In 2005 the development won the ‘Housing Design Award’; and in 2007 won the MIPIM ‘Best Mixed Use’ Award. ‘Barking Central’ was also short listed in the 2007 Building Regeneration Awards for ‘Best Mixed Use Development’, ‘Best Housing Led Development’ and ‘Best Regeneration Project of the Year’.
